President's Message
Welcome to the Western Wake Tennis Association’s (WWTA) newly revamped website! We hope that you will find it easier to navigate and will come back often for the latest news and information about tennis activities and programs taking place in Western Wake County.
WWTA is proud to support tennis programs for all ages and abilities – from the youngest beginners to seniors looking for fun, competitive play, and then some...
- Of course, we sponsor USTA Leagues, including:
- Men's & Women's Leagues in the Spring
- Mixed Doubles, Tri-level, and Singles Leagues in the summer
- Combo Doubles and Singles Leagues in the Fall.
- We also offer opportunities to play in locally-run leagues during the Winter, including:
- Ladies Weekday Leagues, and
- World Team Tennis (weekend play).
- In conjunction with the staff at Cary Tennis Park, we are running a tennis program two mornings and one evening a week specifically for players who are new or returning to the game. The program follows the Introductory Tennis program taught at CTP and gives adults an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned during their lessons without having to commit to an ongoing weekly program. The focus of the program is on the participants having fun, improving their skills, and gaining confidence. The goal of the program is to prepare players to move on eventually to team and league play.
- We give Seniors (ages 50+) opportunities to play in our USTA Adult and Senior Leagues, as well as the Winter WWTA Leagues, but for those who don’t want to play every week, we also sponsor semi-annual Senior Days at the Cary Tennis Park which are fun and well-attended. Lunch is provided, and prizes are awarded!
- We have embraced the QuickStart initiative, which revolutionizes the way in which children between the ages of 3 and 10 learn how to play tennis. During 2009, WWTA began a pilot program and provided QuickStart equipment to 6 local elementary schools, the Apex YMCA, and all local Parks & Recreation departments and private clubs in our area. We will continue to expand this program in 2010, now called P. E. Tennis, with the hope that over the next several years, all 32 public schools in WWTA’s baileywick will incorporate QuickStart tennis in their physical education plans.
- We host a several tournaments during the year for juniors and adults. See our calendar for more information on our tournaments as wells as others happening in our area, and be sure to sign up to play.
- We sponsor an annual Charity Tournament in September which benefits Hospice of Wake County and WWTA scholarships. This fun, all-day event includes women’s doubles and lunch in the morning followed by mixed doubles in the evening. And lots of auction items to bid on at both events!
- We provide scholarships annually to deserving elementary, middle school, and high school students to attend summer tennis camps. Additionally, we award two $1,000 academic scholarships to graduating seniors to help defray the cost of attending college.
How do we do all of this, you may ask, especially with no paid full-time staff? Other than our two Local League Coordinators, who are paid a small stipend, the WWTA is a volunteer run organization. It takes many volunteer hours to manage all the programs, events and leagues. We are always looking for This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. If you are interested in getting involved in guiding the growth of tennis in our area, we would love to hear from you! Contact us, and we will find a volunteer activity that fits you!
Hope to hear from you soon....and we’ll see you on the courts!
